Yet another Outer London Fund commission. The challenge in North Finchley centred around two sites: the inadequately signposted Artsdepot, a cultural centre built on the site of the demolished Finchley Gaumont Cinema and a relinquished shopping arcade; as well as a village area composed of a weekly market, a number of heritage sites and a public library. For the former, to revive the spirit of the long gone cinema we adopted a themed approach to the former two sites – with readograph lettering at different scales. For the latter we opted for site specific signs that suit its content – cast iron, vitreous enamel and ceramic typography.
