The Women’s Library
2009
The exhibition Ms Understood – Women’s Liberation in 1970s Britain documents the various women’s movements that had their origin in that decade. In a chronological sequence the visitor gets introduced to original documents, replicas, films, and artefacts that were used throughout Britain by the protagonists of the movement. The exhibition design plays with the crude, home-made visual language of the protest slogans, juxtaposing it with the delicate character of ‘women’s crafts’. Features include a large white-washed exhibition vitrine, a wall graphic showing the geographical spread of organisations in Britain and fly posters along the façade of the building. A 48-page broadsheet has been published as a free gallery guide.
