From March – November 2005 the Baden Arts Association in Karlsruhe, Germany, hosted a series of four exhibitions with works from international artists. The series with the title ‘Critical Societies’ asked whether contemporary art still has a subversive potential within our society.
The design and structure of the catalogue, which was published after the exhibition series shut its doors to the public, translates the narrative of the four chapters into the form of a documentary report. It contains essays by art historians and curators, photographs of the installations with accompanying written pieces by some of the artists, as well as email conversations that emerged during the course of the exhibition.
