National Trust
2015
At the inititial stage of a five-year progamme we’ve been browsing the immense archive of Knole House, in Sevenoaks. As part of a team consisting of the National Trust Visitor Experience department, the Conservation team and muf architecture/art, we devised a design brief for the Visitor Centre that puts the visitor in touch with as many of the diverse treasures that may be found when visiting the house. A wide variety of objects, ranging from the original visitor's book, over paintings and drawings to little slides and facsimiles of prints have been displayed on all walls, telling a story from the first 15th century occupants of Knole to the part handover into public ownership in 1946.
All interpretation is removed from the wall onto a narrow shelf that runs around the perimeter of the entire space. In addition, a large scale yet detailed handdrawn map, showing all historical layers and curiosities has been devised and art directed by objectif.
