Signage for a public building with complex use
Scheme design, RIBA Stage D, not realised

A public library and archive serves a wide range of visitors – from occasional drop-in visitors to customers with specific requests, from students needing to study quietly for their exams to pensioners wanting to read the local papers over a cup of tea. The signage of such a building should therefore be accessible to a large variety of audience groups, whilst serving one overall purpose: to help its users to navigate with ease, and assist them to find the way to their destinations quickly. And – if their destination is yet to be defined, to invite people to come in and browse.
In addition, consultation with library and archive staff pointed towards a strong requirement for the signage to be flexible. This entails that both position and content of many of the individual signs may change over time, which should be permitted by the sign system from the start. All types of change need to be easily carried out by library and archive staff.

About

objectif is a collaborative design practice based in London, founded by Axel Feldmann and Luisa Hay in 2004. Marco Ugolini joined in 2014. We work at the conjunction of editorial design and its transposition into the architectural realm, specialising in the fields of exhibition design, visitor experience and narrative environments as well as classic book design. Our clients are from a variety of disciplines, with a focus on cultural players, education, architecture and fine art.

We develop graphic and environmental design concepts that are the result of a critical assessment of the content, with the aim of emancipating small-scale businesses, artistic practices and the wider public in the light of an increasingly instrumentalised and commodified cultural and public realm.

Axel has given numerous workshops both in the UK and in his native Germany. Marco is a Senior Lecturer at BA HONS Graphic Design at the University of the West of England, in Bristol, as well as a member of ISTD.

objectif is part of the Greater London Authority’s Design Framework, and a member of its Specialist Advice Team in relation to graphic design within the public realm.
