Southwark Heritage Centre & Walworth Library

London Borough of Southwark
2021

We have been selected as interpretation and wayfinding consultant to work on the design of a new hybrid space functioning as local community library, a display of Southwark’s Cuming collection and an exhibition telling the Story of Southwark.
Our challenges lay in facilitating navigation around what is a densely populated space, and at the same time connecting the library contents with the embedded collection. This has been achieved by a complex family of devices that tie the navigation signage and the interpretation together.
The interpretation for the Story of Southwark exhibition has been developed in a second phase. It applies the typography consistent with the library / collection space, but uses a distinct and strong colour scheme. As part of the exhibtion package we designed a wall sized map of the borough, as well as a Gallery wall showcasing historic drawing and painting.
