National Maritime Museum
2019

We have been commissioned to design the interpretation within the ‘streets’ – the covered inner courtyard of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
Given the large quantity of diverse and somewhat incoherent exhibits within the space we opted for a conceptual approach of an industrial shipyard, where one discovers a variety of random objects, each with a rich story to be told. As carrier material for all plinths blackened steel has been selected, with all text and graphics being on vitreous enamel and matching etched steel plaques. As teasers to the collections on display behind the rather opaque neoclassical façades large illustrations have been added to carefully selected viewing lines.
Lastly, some quotes have been ‘graffittied’ to the rustication, reflecting voices of sailors throughout the centuries.
